Once again, Pinoy's huddled, cuddled and cheered the whole day away. Beer bottles were out while the BBQ roasted on the grill. For the less unfortunate brothers, there is always the ever present Sugo nuts and coffee.

Never mind the unfortunate souls stranded on the streets freezing their butts off in the cold weather. Never mind the schedules and meetings to keep or go to. for now and for at least the past three hours (1 hour for the fight and two hours for the commercials)time stood still for all pinoys and consequences be dammed.

By the way, if you're still reading this far hoping for a blow by blow account of how the fight went, you're in the wrong blog (go to Bhenki's blog for an unofficial account). This post isn't about the rounds that happened inside the ring but is instead about those that went on or is going to happen relatively unnoticed behind it. He he

Here they are:

Round 1: Manny's mother as usual spent the day "praying," all the while seeming to whisper secret incantations to weaken dela hoya (noticed dela hoya's drugged expression and slower than usual reflexes during the fight?). As usual (again) she theatrically faints for the cameras as soon as the results were out; must be from thinking about the new car her son will buy her if he wins the fight (don't mind me, I'm just sour graping; I drive a second-hand Kia without a spare tire and a shock problem)

Round 2: Madam president (as usual) is very proud of Manny. Ever noticed that Manny's fights always coincide with intense political issues? If the adage "there's no smoke without fire," Gloria should be roasting now. I mean, come on! We're fairly choking here! This time, Pacquiao's fight happened while the constitution change/impeachment controversy is heating up. Manny wins fight. Controversy is temporarily diffused. Madam president saved by the bell. (again)he he

Round 3: ABS-CBN acts as official spoiler for the GMA telecast. Announces Manny's victory waay before the fight began in the other channel.

Round 4: Governor Darlene (as usual) is proud of Manny's historic victory and role as Pambansang Kamao. Although looking back, she wasn't as proud of the same attributes when Manny was running against her in the past election. At least Manny can box. How was she supposed to earn her millions if Manny encroached on her ring? He he

Round 5: Scores of government officials are also proclaiming their adulation for the Pambansang Kamao. Rubbing their hands together, peeing in their pants thinking of how to make Manny's victory/prize tax disappear unnoticed from the nation's coffers.

Round 6: Manny's neighbors, relatives and scores of other people must be already jostling for space in the long long long line of balato/cut petitioners that will form in front of Manny's house as soon as he gets home.

Round 7: Commercials (as usual) were much much longer than the actual show. I'll bet there are millions of pinoys walking around right now with commercial versions of last song syndrome in their heads. Many will sleep tonight disturbed by reruns of LBC commercials, nation paint, smart, vulca seal and of course the "O-ha!" breathe in- breathe out odorless paint commercial. He he

Round 8: Even the electric company was considerate (or scared) enough not to schedule their daily unannounced blackouts during Manny's fight. Hhmmm.. Perhaps they know how big the people's outrage will be should they pull the plug during the fight, hehe. So, on a rare show of competence, they managed to supply power to most of the Philippines for at least a few straight hours... then pulled the plug a few minutes after the fight (at least where I was).

Round 9: Its back to our dreary old, underpaid, overtaxed and overworked lives. For the next few days, many people will focus and talk more about Manny's millions of dollars from the fight instead of the usual social issues. Once more, Gloria will be busy shoring up her political defenses grateful for the reprieve or should I say, distraction.

Oh well.. Until Manny's fight with Hatton then. He he

Going green seems to be all in the rage today what with the world's climate going bonkers and the earth's resources dwindling to dangerous levels. Reading up on this topic, viewing the eco-videos and watching discovery channel programs, I've decided to jump on the green bandwagon and give my two cents worth of advice.

I've titled this post the green evolution because I think the way we use our bodies and even the way we deal with our shit (literally) may play an important role in saving our planet.

As for the other half of the title "creative eco-solutions", they are named such because I've never seen them discussed in eco programs anywhere. Maybe someone already thought of them and dropped them after finding out the ideas were worthless.

So anyway, here are my "weird" eco-ideas:

1.The Jebs/Shit Collector

Briefly mentioned in my Top 5 Places for Reflection Post and Chaos Blog, the jebs collector involves connecting all the septic tanks in our cities and piping the pooh to local composting centers. Add to this mix all the organic trash and you have a powerful composting unit capable of providing a substantial amount of methane gas for cooking as well as fertilizer for farming.

Our current dumpsite (Payatas) is also capable of producing methane gas and is in fact already doing this through its prototype methane extraction system. An expansion of this system as well as the construction of the above mentioned jebs collection system will lower our dependence on oil. Furthermore, it's free and sustainable. It's basically a human pooh powered system!

Hmmm...Then again, why collect pooh to produce methane when we can collect fart and cut the process short? He he, imagine fart collector bottles stuck up our ass as we move around? Fart Powered cars!

2.Human Batteries

When we talk about energy, we seem to regard it as something finite and resource based. A change in our basic perception on energy alone can open up a considerable number of opportunities.

Energy can be recycled. Consider: on one hand, we are facing severe energy shortages. On the other hand, it is only in this century that the problem of 'excess stores of energy' in people is becoming widespread. To put it simply, people are becoming obese and this has become one of the most common health issues in several countries. Let's consider some basic perceptions in this scenario:

- People want to be healthy

- Government wants cheap energy sources

Add to this the following:

- Government wants a healthy population (more taxes and less medical programs)

- People would probably appreciate free gym memberships

Putting the two together, why don’t we redesign gym workout machines so as to take advantage of the human kinetic energy being lost? kinda like the matrix without the blood, gore and the naked men. he he

Simply install alternators on the weight pulleys, stationary bikes or treadmill rollers, connect them together in series and what do you have?

Human generated power! This form of energy capture is already being applied to the newest models of hybrid cars through retroactive breaking so why not apply the same principle here?

We can also apply the same principle to shopping carts (new designs are being used as exercise machines anyways), airport trolleys, etc.

3.Drain Water Powered Turbines

We use a substantial amount of energy pumping water to cities and yet we don’t even try to recoup some of this energy as the same water (added with rain water) goes back down to sea level.

Why don’t we install a series of mini dams and small turbines in our cities' drainage system or in high rise building's drainage systems to take advantage of the kinetic energy of this run off water? Just make sure to filter it first else we'll find bloody napkins stuck on the turbines.

4.Cheap Wind Power

Wind power needs not be expensive. So what if the wind turbine design is not that efficient if it is sturdy and can be mass produced cheaply?

A variation of the Savonious rotor design shown below is not only cheap but light as well. It can also be manufactured at a low cost of more or less $300 each.Imagine populating rural towns with this device or imagine a version that fits right on top of our street lights. Even if it only generates enough power for our street lights, wouldn’t it reduce our energy consumption by a big factor?

What's more, the Savonious rotor can also be connected to a water pump instead of an alternator. This in turn can be used for pumping water out for farm irrigation.

Hmmm...What about wind powered washing machines and spin dryers? He he

5.Eco-Paint

This is different from the biological solar cells I've mentioned in my Godhood or Dark Ages blog. This eco-paint is different. Its a cross between paint and algae. You paint it on buildings, trucks, roads, etc and it will extract carbon dioxide from the air and convert it to oxygen. Moreover, it will also reproduce and self-regenerate allowing it not only to repaint itself but to spread over to non-green structures, in time coloring everything green even your car, he he. Talk about Green City!

6.Space Tax

The world is finite, it's resources are finite and unless people stop humping each other, our only option is find a way to support more people with less and less resources. Pretty soon we'll find ourselves drawing sticks to find out who's gonna get eaten next.

The only way out of this vicious cycle in the long run is to find a way to open new horizons much like the New World for the Old Worlders.

Space mining = less stress on the Earth's resources and less loss of species.

Space farming = less stress on food production.

Space based power stations and industries = solar farms, nuclear power and space factories means less pollution.

Space colonies = now we can go humping indefinitely (or at least until several billion years from now when we've exhausted the known universe, he he).

Cynics are fond of saying that space exploration and expansion is way too expensive. Well so are the thousands of outdated and unsold CD and DVD players rusting in the shelves of company warehouses, so are the millions of breakfast cereals, bread, canned goods and whatever thrown away every year because they were not sold. How about the resources that went into producing unsold cars, gaming consoles, big screen LCD TVs, etc, etc, etc??

Do they mean to say that expansion into space and thus the subsequent survival of the human race is way more expensive than the excesses of a consumerist society? Again, it’s not a question of the lack of resources but the lack of political will and our inefficient management of resources. A special tax for the purpose of expanding into space should see this easily accomplished. This idea by the way has already been discussed thoroughly in Stephen Baxter's book - Manifold Time.

7.Mini-Size Me

If we can't make the world larger, our resources more, and expansion into space a reality then maybe we better start thinking of breeding ourselves towards a smaller sized specie. After all, smaller people means smaller cars, smaller buses, smaller homes, less food consumption, etc, etc.

A 32 inch TV will look like a 62 inch one, Asian cars will be as roomy as Humvees and the shrinking food servings due to the shitty economy will start looking like normal servings again.

Filipinos are ahead in this case should this be the next evolutionary step. We are already a race of small people to start with, he he...

Hmmmm... Maybe that's why Gloria is generally optimistic about where we are headed as a nation? Maybe this is her master plan for our economy.O_o

** Asked by a confused high school girl in a forum a long time ago - to which I replied:

They say the longest journey begins with a single step...

same goes for love i suppose,

love isn't something that comes delivered complete in no-assembly-required packages

moreover, it isn't a software program you get to install at a certain age that will run bug free after activation.

like all other natural processes, love is something learned through baby steps, bruised knees and battle scars.

you crawl before you walk and you walk before you run...

no shortcuts, no cheats

it's a lifelong learning process..

some of us get to graduate before we die

while some spend their whole lives stuck in high school..

infatuation?

puppy love?

well maybe that's your first step for your own journey.

don't worry, you'll learn things as you go along

just remember to keep your eyes on the finish line.

Ever got that feeling that there's a conspiracy going on and that some of the BIG problems in our country are just covers for a money making business?

My father loves to say "In chaos there is opportunity so why fix it?" whenever he comes across news items or everyday government bullshit that smells suspiciously like fish.

Meralco and its highly controversial system loss charge.. Why fix it if there are government officials and Meralco officers getting free electricity from the deal?

LTO, BIR and COMELEC's long lines and convoluted procedures. Who says the system's broke?? After all, the system's working beautifully for the Fixers and the Fixers' partners right??

The economy going belly up and the prices of goods going through the roof? Chaos and opportunities galore! After all, how would you justify EVAT (and thus be able to dip your fingers into it) if everything is going well?

Do you honestly think the government loses sleep over the high price of oil? Think again!Oil is one of the prime sources of EVAT as well as regular tax. Why in the hell would they want to fix this problem if they can get to pocket more now and fly to Switzerland later?!

Regardless of what excuses, records, statistics or platitudes they might come up with, I wouldn’t trust our government farther than I can spit. Why? Because these 'guards' don’t want any guards watching them! If they did then they would've thought of the following checks and balances first:

1. Bantay Boto ( Guarding our Votes )

A relatively simple idea, use mobile phones (its camera, video and audio recorders) to make sure our elections are clean and honest. How many politicians have you heard railing against election fraud and tampering?.. Too many to count.

How many politicians have you heard proposing this simple yet effective idea before our TV networks came up with it?... He he he, thought so.

Now how many politicians do you hear talking about how this proven and effective system could be improved further through online forums, video sharing, online real-time election monitoring, social network of election guardians, etc?

He he he, see? Do you think they really want elections to be clean and open to the public?? Do you really think Gloria gives a rats ass about eradicating election fraud this 2010?? HELLO!...Garci..He he

2. Bantay Buget (Government Budget Transparency)

If our politicians were so serious about fighting against corruption, why don’t they and their contractors post their budget breakdown online where we can talk about it and debate its accuracy? If you want to make people feel assured that no corruption and under the table deals are taking place, then wouldn’t you welcome the help of thousands of Filipinos monitoring, dissecting and guarding our money?

Then again, you can't post expenses like "brown paper bags with P500,000 inside given as incentives to governors" on this type of system right? He he he

By the way, Naga City's budget as well as all the bids in city projects are posted online (www.naga.gov.ph) where people can check it and talk about it. Thumbs up to Major Jesse Robredo. Maybe there's hope after all.

3. Bantay Opisyal ( Accountability of Politicians)

Imbestigador seems like an effective way of catching government crooks and compelling the government to act. Use videos and recordings of the people as proof, give them media exposure and match the case with the appropriate professionals to get it going and its easily done.

Why doesn’t the government set up a Linked In/YouTube/Ebay like site where:

1. People can post graft and corruption videos

2.Comment and add data on them

3.Match them with professionals with track records of successfully pursuing its cases ( Linked In with Ebay feedback system )

... Oh right...Chaos equals opportunity, how did I forget that..

4. Bantay Cellphone (Cellphone Snatching)

How many cellphones are snatched each year? Moreover, how many innocent lives are snuffed out each year because of cellphone snatching?

Now how hard is it to set up a program like the one below:

GPS tracking + Mobile Phone's MAC address/ serial number = triangulation of snatched phone and snatcher

Add the following regulations to the system:

1.All cellphones and serial numbers must be registered by retailers on a government site when sold.

2.Owners are given user passwords for the online mobile phone registration site.

3.People selling their phones to another must register and verify the sale online.

4. Mobile phone unblocking services must be monitored by the government.

5. Pawnshops must verify ownership of mobile phone online before accepting phones as collateral.

Is the above system that hard to set up?

Or is it in the government's interest to let the current chaos rule?

Maybe we can just pack our mobile phones with C4 and remote detonate them when snatched? He he, talk about the cellphone owners' War of Terror!

5. Bantay Botante ( Flying Voters)

Sometimes it’s not just the votes but the voters themselves that must be guarded. Why, because in our country even the dead votes! I mean, I know democracy teaches us the virtue of a one man one vote system, but I don’t think it's supposed to include the dead.

Moreover, voters who use "gwapo kasi/ he's handsome", "mukhang mabait/ he looks nice" or "ma prinsipyo sa peliku / is principled in movies" as a criteria for voting may be on the gray fringes of democracy but flying voters are definitely on the dark side!

Rights exist hand in hand with responsibility. People should be removed from the list of voters if caught selling their votes! Moreover, people should have easy access to information about, qualifications and track record of all politicians running for office.

Think Political Friendster accounts coupled with an Ebay feedback program based on performance appraisal systems. Account page would also include all projects undertaken and its verified outcomes, achievements and their proof, as well as a record of all votes given to proposals, laws, issues, etc. Add this to a forum and a blog on the site and you have a very powerful political awareness platform.

Imagine a political candidate roll social network where you can compare running politicians to each much like comparing X-men playing cards, he he, wouldn’t it help us choose our politicians a lot better?

Jamby madrigal says she has her own Friendster account, who knows, maybe this might even become a norm come 2010 elections. He he,

6. Bantay Energiya ( Power Issues)

Judy Ann recently went on national TV explaining to the masses how Meralco's system loss is a part of everyday life.

She may have a point there.Basic electromagnetics states that system loss does occur because of wire resistance but system loss due to political cronies or Meralco officials tapping into the electric grid for a lifetime of free electricity? I don’t think that's a part of the standard definition for system loss, he he

There's a simple device called an ammeter that can measure the amount of electric current flowing in and out of electrical circuits. This device alone could make the detection of illegal connections very very easy. Now which is cheaper?

A one time cost of installing an ammeter for every electric post in the country? Or a lifetime cost of power tapping that translates into what they call 'system loss'?

Following this line of reasoning further, which is cheaper, a one time cost of installing street light guards and a light activated bulb (turns on automatically when its dark) or a lifetime of frequent bulb replacements and energy waste?

Add this to the open windows in air-conditioned rooms, the continued use of incandescent light bulbs and water coolers/heaters in government agencies and do you really believe the government is serious when it says energy conservation is good and it sympathizes with its people when it comes to energy price hikes??

Do you see the "chaos" here? do you also see the opportunities for graft and corruption?

7. Bantay Pirata (Battle against Piracy)

uuhhhmmm...Is this really considered a problem in our country? I mean you really don't have to go to dark alleys and seedy looking places just to buy pirated DVDs right? Hell, everyone knows where pirated DVDs are sold! In a commercial building that used to be a cinema, right across the mall and usually even inside malls, right beside the supermart's checkout counter, right beside the flyover and across Quiapo church, etc, etc.Knock knock Madam President, retailers of pirated DVDs are not exactly hiding under rocks. Usually, they are just a few meters away from the nearest policemen. He he.

Solution? Isn’t it obvious? He he, then again maybe there is such a thing as an unofficial PVAT (pirated goods value added tax).

8. Bantay Addict ( Anti-Drugs )

Have you ever met a closet addict that nobody knew was taking drugs??

" I thought he only had a permanent cold what with all the sniffing and red eyes..Never noticed his body twitching though.. "

or

"I thought they were just sniffing tawas"

I know drug pushers are hard to find and drug lords harder still but what happens if you ship all the addicts you find to a separate island? Will the pushers and drug lords stick around hoping to convince non users into becoming users? Furthermore, will the rate of conversion be greater than or equal to the rate of deportation? He he, drug users are also way way easier to catch, just air a commercial.

Text addict [space] name [space] address and send to 2366.

9. Bantay Kalusugan ( Pro-Health)

Government doesn’t have enough money to give sufficient medicines to the poor.. Fair enough.. But some free medicines are way better than none right?

What if instead of medicine, the government distributes seeds of medicinal herbal plants to rural clinics all around the country and instead of unsustainable government subsidized drug stores, sick people can go to government herbal gardens just behind the local clinic?

Of course, we cant expect these herbal gardens to address all the ailments but I'll bet the savings we can get from these free and sustainable herbal gardens will help much in covering for those health ailments that needs conventional meds.

Cost of operation? Research into herbal meds, seeds, gardening and water. Then again, if you count the opportunity lost because of decreased chaos then the cost becomes astronomical for the politicians. He he

10. Bantay Kalikasan (Resource Management)

The natural environment doesn’t produce "waste". Before we came, everything in nature was part of a cycle that makes most of its resources. Dung becomes compost in which plants grew.Plants recycle air and become food for animals, etc, etc.

Garbage becomes a problem not because of the lack of resources to dispose of it but because of the lack of systems to utilize and profit from it - and this is a problem of political will rather than resource.

Consider the following scenario:

Waste from Cities

Food:

A. Excess food and Fast-food items that have not been bought/gone cold and which are usually thrown away could be collected and used to jumpstart feeding program for the poor working in farms in outlying towns (participating business gets a tax break, government has less waste problem and poor gets food = win win situation )

B. Leftover food is also taken to the farms as feeds for hogs and other farm animals. ( hog farmers gets cheap feeds and thus price of meat becomes lower, less waste problem for government, food businesses benefits from cheaper meat = win win situation )

C. Pig manure, dead plants and other decomposable trash are collected into local composting tanks - turns into cheap fertilizer and methane gas. ( cheap fertilizer leads to cheaper rice, fruits and veggies, methane can be piped and used for cooking and alternative fuel, less garbage problem for the government and more economic progress = win win situation )

Non-Perishable Trash

A. Non-recyclable plastics outlawed, containers minimized. shampoos, toothpaste, jam, etc. are refilled like computer ink and mineral water. Plastic shopping bags are replaced by reusable bags. (lower production costs for companies, cheaper prices for consumers and less garbage for government to clean up)

B. Recyclable materials are segregated, recycled and reused (lower dependence on imports, less damage to environment and new job opportunities to the poor)

C. Landfills also mined for methane and piped to cities as cooking gas and alternative fuel.

Our country doesn’t need more money or resources to drastically improve our economic situation. We do however need a new mindset, one that involves:

- The proper management not just of resources but of 'wastes'

- The realization that Lower living costs are just as beneficial as higher wages.

- The strengthening of political will to create the systems that will jumpstart efficient resource management.

But why alienate big corporations with these sweeping changes? The government after all doesn’t bite the hand that feeds it. He he

A sincere call for change and a genuine stand against graft and corruption should not only involve sound bites for the media and vague references to projects and proposals that people cannot monitor and much more take part of.

A sincere public servant will always advocate transparency of information, finance and procedures, accountability for decisions and results, and more importantly the participation of people who can help by suggesting/doing better ways to accomplish the task.

People should recognize the fact that our politicians are way smarter than they seem. The complicated procedures, the long lines, the inefficient systems, the seemingly unsolvable problems are usually products not of the lack of imagination, resource or even fate but of the basic conflict of interest between the government and the people.

With great chaos come great opportunities...

Why settle for the small bucks that come with a Country's progress when they can make much much more with a Country's Woes?

So why fix something if its going to make them broke?

5 cockroaches down, a thousand and one more to go. One lies dead poisoned by insect spray, three lies squashed being dragged home by buyadores ants ( could almost hear them roar VIVA! ) and the last one's splattered on the wall thanks to a well aimed rubber projectile that used to be on my foot.

What's so special about tonight by the way? Why are there suddenly scores of cockroaches (which is a funny name for an insect by the way if you think about it - brings to mind regular roaches gifted with cocks) flying around the house? Asked my younger sister about it to which she answered "its gonna rain". And so?? It sure as hell not gonna rain inside the house. What's the rain ruckus for?

I wonder how many people die each year because of roaches? Falling down the stairs as they try to avoid them, cracking their heads against tiles as they try to kill the fuckers or having a heart attack thinking about where the fuckers hid? Must be a pretty senseless and stupid way to die. "here lies Bert, killed in action while trying to squash a cockroach".

Also, why do flying roaches have that nasty habit of trying to land on people's foreheads? Do they somehow think this is an airstrip? Do they even realize that their aerial acrobatics could substantially decrease their probabilities of living another day? Encouraging guys to fight like barbarians armed with rubber slippers as much as to flee like a bunch of homos.

Some say the best defense is the best offense and this sometimes translates into being scary at times. Sometimes our opponent calls our bluff and creams us good in the process but that's life for you. And yet sometimes its better to just blend in the background and hope to God you look like a part of the furniture rather than confront the threat and get squashed to kingdom come. Today, Some roaches hid and some flew like kamikaze planes. Most of those who flew now lies dead or dying - they're last thoughts being "What the fuck was that??!!"

Some also say revenge is a dish best served cold and hitting where it hurts best is many times better than a bluff.

In this sense, some cockroaches are a lot more intelligent than others. One of them bit me in the eye while i was asleep. 5 dead comrades were avenged while the great giant squasher that was me tossed and turned for the rest of the night with a swollen eye. Oh how the mighty exterminator has fallen!
